Koa Kimura Sensei's Photo-Journal:

The Story of Aikido in Hawaii,

1961

*Please contact us if you find any inactive links*

When Koa Kimura Sensei passed away in 1997, a photo-journal which he had kept since 1961 was passed onto his grandson, Steve Nishi. Steve has given permission to put this journal onto the Web.

Table of Contents:

The journal consists of 40 pages containing 142 photographs, many of O-sensei. The journal is divided into the sections given below. The section titles used here are directly from the journal. Each page consists of reduced copies of the photographs. Most photographs can be clicked on to download a larger version of the picture. Each page of the photo-journal is represented by one web page.

According to a sticker on the inside cover of the journal, the photographer and editor was H. M. Sakoda.

Technical Notes:

The photographs in the journal are of varying sizes. Most were scanned in at 150 dpi (on an HP Scanjet IIx scanner) and then converted to jpeg format. The smaller versions of the photographs all have the same vertical size for sake of convenience, but otherwise retain their relative proportions. All photographs in the journal have been included regardless of any sense of merit with regards to content. In some cases, absolutely "empty" spaces were cropped in order to avoid unnecessarily large file sizes and corresponding download time. Examples of such cropping would be extensive areas showing ceilings or mat space. We believe that no diminution of photograph quality has been produced by the minor cropping which was done. The photographs may be better viewed by downloading and saving them on your computer and then viewing them with a graphics program other than your Net browser. All photographs are originally in black and white. A great deal of darkening has occured in the original photographs, they have been "lightened" to bring out detail and, in some cases, converted to gray-scale to remove yellowing. Only a very few other modifications have been made to any of the photographs. We hope you enjoy these photographs and encourage you to provide any information regarding the people and situations portrayed via our e-mail.
